Farewell, Oscar

Oscar, Forever Loved and Honored

In June of 2009, this amazing being was struck by a car and suffered a badly broken hip. He was brought to Wes Laraway of NY Wildlife Rescue, who transported him to Cornell University’s Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital. There, he made national news as Cornell’s first big cat full hip replacement.

When Wes was asked for a name, he gave them “Oscar (the Grouch),” due to the adult male bobcat’s total badass attitude.

Though the surgery itself was a great success, the hip never did heal well enough that Oscar would have been able to hunt again. The rescue center became his home.

Today, Oscar passed into the great beyond, after nearly fifteen years of being NY Wildlife Rescue’s most famous resident, Wes’s favorite challenge, and one of the most phenomenal creatures I have ever had the honor to know.

Farewell, you beautiful, intense spirit of all things wild.

Give ’em hell.
